Quick Answer

India is the No. 1-ranked men’s T20I side in the ICC team rankings, with a rating of 268 from 61 matches and 16,366 total points — narrowly ahead of England (268, 38 matches) in 2nd and Australia (260) in 3rd. India and England share the same rounded rating, but India edges ahead on the underlying, unrounded points-per-match figure.

T20I team rankings rate every side by points earned per match played, not total wins — so a team that plays fewer matches against strong opposition can rank above one that plays more matches overall. Below is the current top 20, refreshed after every completed T20I in the ICC’s rolling ratings model.

How the ICC Team Rating Works

A team’s rating is its total ratings points divided by the number of matches counted in the current window — not simply wins minus losses. Every completed T20I adds points to both teams based on the result and each side’s rating at the time of the match, so beating a higher-rated opponent earns more than beating a weaker one. Older results are gradually weighted down and eventually drop out of the calculation entirely, which is why a team’s rating can shift even without playing a new match. Because ratings are shown as rounded whole numbers, two teams can display an identical rating — as India and England do here — while still being ranked in a strict order based on the unrounded figure underneath.

Why matches played varies so much between teams: the “Matches” column only counts games within the ICC’s current rating window, not a team’s entire T20I history — so a side that’s played a packed recent schedule (like India’s 61) will naturally show far more than one that’s played a lighter one (like the USA’s 20), independent of how good either team currently is.

Notable Movements Since the Last Update

India holds top spot on the back of the highest match count and points total in the rankings, just ahead of England on the tie-break. Among the Associate nations, Netherlands has climbed one place to No. 14, while Namibia has slipped one place to No. 15. Three sides — Namibia, Nepal and Scotland — all display an identical rating of 179 at Nos. 15 to 17, a reminder that displayed ratings are rounded and don’t always show the full gap between ranked teams.

FAQs: Men’s T20I Team Rankings

Q. Which is the No. 1 ranked men’s T20I team right now?

India is currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, with a rating of 268 from 61 matches.

Q. How often does the ICC update the T20I team rankings?

Team ratings are recalculated after every completed T20I, so the table can change several times during a single series or tournament.

Q. How is the ICC T20I team rating calculated?

A team’s rating is its total ratings points divided by matches played within the current rating window, with points earned per match weighted by the strength of the opponent faced.

Q. Why do India and England show the same rating but different ranks?

The displayed rating is rounded to a whole number. India and England both round to 268, but India’s underlying, unrounded points-per-match figure is marginally higher, which is why it ranks first.
