How the ICC Team Rating Works

A team’s rating is its total ratings points divided by the number of matches counted in the current window — not simply wins minus losses. Every completed ODI adds points to both teams based on the result and each side’s rating at the time of the match, so beating a higher-rated opponent earns more than beating a weaker one. Older results are gradually weighted down and eventually drop out of the calculation entirely, which is why a team’s rating can shift even without playing a new match. Because ratings are shown as rounded whole numbers, two teams can display an identical rating — as Australia and South Africa do here — while still being ranked in a strict order based on the unrounded figure underneath.

The ODI team table is unusually settled at the moment — every side in the top 20 holds the same position it did before the last completed round of matches, with no rank changes recorded. India continues to lead comfortably ahead of New Zealand, while Australia and South Africa share an identical displayed rating of 102 at Nos. 3 and 4, separated only by the underlying unrounded figure.
