Quick Answer
Australia is the No. 1-ranked men’s Test side in the ICC team rankings, with a rating of 126 from 27 matches and 3,411 total points — ahead of South Africa (119) in 2nd and New Zealand (106) in 3rd. Only 10 teams currently carry a rated position, since far fewer nations play Test cricket regularly compared with the white-ball formats.
Test team rankings rate every side by points earned per match played, not total wins — so a team that plays fewer matches against strong opposition can rank above one that plays more matches overall. Below is the current top 10, refreshed after every completed Test in the ICC’s rolling ratings model.

How the ICC Team Rating Works
A team’s rating is its total ratings points divided by the number of matches counted in the current window — not simply wins minus losses. Every completed Test adds points to both teams based on the result and each side’s rating at the time of the match, so beating a higher-rated opponent earns more than beating a weaker one. Older results are gradually weighted down and eventually drop out of the calculation entirely, which is why a team’s rating can shift even without playing a new match. Because ratings are shown as rounded whole numbers, two teams can display an identical rating — as Sri Lanka and Pakistan do here — while still being ranked in a strict order based on the unrounded figure underneath.
Notable Movements Since the Last Update
The Test team table is currently settled, with every side holding the same position it did before the last completed round of matches — no rank changes recorded. Australia leads comfortably at the top, with South Africa and New Zealand completing the top 3. Further down, Sri Lanka and Pakistan share an identical displayed rating of 75 at Nos. 7 and 8, separated only by the underlying unrounded figure.
FAQs: Men’s Test Team Rankings
Australia is currently ranked No. 1 in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, with a rating of 126 from 27 matches.
Team ratings are recalculated after every completed Test, so the table can change during and after any series.
A team’s rating is its total ratings points divided by matches played within the current rating window, with points earned per match weighted by the strength of the opponent faced.
The displayed rating is rounded to a whole number. Both teams round to 75, but Sri Lanka’s underlying, unrounded points-per-match figure is marginally higher, which is why it ranks seventh.
